DIY Guide: Adjusting Sagging Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Crooked cabinet doors are one of the most common issues in Auckland kitchens due to natural house settling and daily wear. Fortunately, you don't need to replace your hardware. Modern European-style concealed hinges (like Blum, Hettich, or Kaboodle hinges) feature three built-in adjustment screws that allow you to adjust door alignment in three dimensions.
Here is how to align your cupboard doors in minutes using only a Phillips-head screwdriver.
1. Left or Right Adjustment (Lateral) If your doors are overlapping or sitting crookedly, you need to adjust the side-to-side alignment. - Locate the front-most screw on the hinge arm (closest to the door). - Turning this screw clockwise moves the door closer to the side cabinet frame, while turning it counter-clockwise pushes it away. - Make small quarter-turn adjustments on both the top and bottom hinges until the door sits plumb.
2. Up or Down Adjustment (Vertical) If the top edge of your doors don't align horizontally across your kitchen cabinets, adjust the vertical height. - Locate the two screws on the mounting plate attached to the cabinet wall. - Loosen these screws slightly on both hinges. - Slide the door up or down to the correct level, then tighten the screws securely.
3. In or Out Adjustment (Depth) If the door doesn't close flush or has a wide gap between it and the cabinet frame, adjust the depth. - Locate the rear-most screw on the hinge arm. - Loosen this screw slightly, slide the door flush with the cabinet face, and re-tighten the screw.
