How to Fix Stripped Hinge Screw Holes in MDF Cabinets

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and particle board are the standard materials for modern modular kitchens, including IKEA and Kaboodle. While these materials are durable, they are relatively soft. Over time, opening and closing heavy cupboard doors can pull screws loose, stripping the wood fibers inside the hole until the screw spins freely.
Here is a simple, highly effective professional joiner's trick to repair stripped cabinet screw holes using common household items.
The Glue and Toothpick Method This method reconstructs the stripped core, giving the screw fresh wood fibers to bite into.
- Step 1: Remove the Hinge. Unscrew the hinge from the cabinet wall to expose the stripped hole fully.
- Step 2: Apply Wood Glue. Dip 3 to 4 wooden toothpicks (or wooden matchsticks with the heads removed) in high-quality PVA wood glue.
- Step 3: Pack the Hole. Insert the glue-coated toothpicks tightly into the stripped hole until it is completely filled. Snap off the excess toothpick ends so they sit flush with the cabinet board face.
- Step 4: Let it Dry. Allow the glue to dry completely (usually 2 to 3 hours).
- Step 5: Reinstall Hinge. Place the hinge back over the hole. Screw the wood screw directly into the toothpick-packed plug. The screw will compress the wood and glue, creating a rock-solid structural grip that will last for years.
