How to Repair Peeling Cabinet Veneer Edges

Peeling cabinet door edges are a common sight in kitchens and laundries. The protective plastic or wood veneer edge strip (known as edge banding) is applied with hot-melt glue at the factory. Exposure to steam from kettles, dishwashers, and ovens causes this glue to dry out and release, causing the edge to curl and peel.

Here is how to repair peeling cabinet veneer edges using a standard household clothes iron.

The Household Iron Repair Method Since the original adhesive is a heat-activated glue, we can reactivate it to lock the strip back down.

  • Step 1: Clean the Area. Use a dry cloth to brush away any dust or loose dirt behind the peeling edge strip.
  • Step 2: Cover with Baking Paper. Place a sheet of baking paper (parchment paper) over the peeling strip to protect the plastic melamine from melting.
  • Step 3: Apply Heat. Set your clothes iron to a medium heat setting (no steam). Press the iron firmly over the baking paper, sliding it slowly along the peeling edge for 10 to 15 seconds. The heat will melt the dry glue underneath.
  • Step 4: Press and Cool. Remove the iron and immediately press the edge strip down firmly using a clean block of wood or a dry cloth. Hold it flat for 30 seconds until the glue cools and hardens.
  • Step 5: Trim Excess Glue. If any glue squeezed out, scrape it away gently with a plastic scraper.

*If the edge strip is missing or cracked, our qualified Auckland installers can fit replacement melamine or timber edge banding for a seamless showroom finish.*
